Latin Jazz & More
More than just another Latin jazz group, Marimjazzia is an experimental musical project in which Dr. Álamo aims to create an original repertoire combining Afro-Caribbean rhythms, particularly those from his native Puerto Rico, with melodic and harmonic elements of modern jazz.
The music of Marimjazzia is also influenced by the work of vibraphone masters such as Cal Tjader, Bobby Hutcherson, Dave Samuels, and Milt Jackson. Currently, Dr. Álamo is composing new music for his next recording project to be released in the fall of 2016. Dr. Álamo is the Professor of Percussion at the University of UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and he is a performing artist and clinician for Yamaha, Meinl Percussion and Encore Mallets Inc.
Marimjazzia is a Latin jazz ensemble formed in 2014 by Puerto Rican percussionist, marimba soloist and jazz vibraphonist Dr. Juan Álamo.
Born and raised in Cidra, Puerto Rico, Dr. Álamo has presented solo recitals at Universities, and presented Percussion Jazz Festivals throughout the United States, Central and South America, Europe and the Caribbean.
He has been featured as a soloist and with Jazz ensembles in television and radio shows in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States. Dr. Álamo has recorded and shared the stage; performing in collaboration with renowned artists such as Tito Puente, John Wooton, Dave Samuels, Michael Spiro, Alfredo Naranjo, Claudio Roditi, Etienne Charles, Rodney Whitaker, and Ted Piltzecker.
